Mastodon user implying that state driver’s licenses on phones could lead to authorities rifling through your phone

Ah yes, this is a great way to turn “Can I see your driver’s license?” into “Can you hand me your unlocked phone so I can rifle through it?” at a traffic stop. Yes, it’s more convenient than having a separate card, and it may serve as a great backup in case your physical card is lost or damaged. But please don’t use this as your only driver’s license, especially if you are an often-targeted demographic.

I had to check my own privilege when reading this post this morning. I had never even thought about the fact that if my driver’s license is on my phone, that the cop would ask me to hand them my phone. Umm, no. I’m not handing you my phone.

While I have mine on my phone now:

  • I don’t live in California, and
  • From my examination of the difgital “card”, it doesn’t seem to lend itself to be looked at (there’s no information visible on the “front” of the card)

Like so many things, just hoping this doesn’t become a thing that we look back on and regret.
