I was listening to “Reconcilable Differences” and John says the following:
People of faith never admit there could ever be anything different, but a scientist must admit that. They must offer that.
I know John said that in a throw-away manner in discussing the 1997 movie “Contact”, but he’s more right than he may know. The implied “that” in the quote is the idea of doubt. The person of faith seemingly never has to concede that they might be wrong. They feel personally attacked at the mere mention. Why is that?
(By the way, the movie successfully jumps back and forth on its debate of rationalization vs. faith.)
