This article by Andrea Pitzer, someone unbeknownst to me before now, was fantastically written. And says exactly what I’ve been trying to say for years, but not able to this succinctly.
Observers have repeatedly been showing for some time that despite having talented reporters and editors on staff, legacy print outlets seem to struggle with covering Donald Trump. They’ve noted his unfitness for office; they’ve mentioned his problematic statements. But on a day-to-day basis, they stumble over and over to convey what is actually happening. Why can’t legacy media say clearly what he’s doing on a consistent basis?
I could not agree more. They have basically given up holding him, or anyone on the MAGA side, accountable for their statements and/or actions. These trained, professional journalists chalk it up to “Trump being Trump” and then move on. As if that’s ok. As if that’s acceptable for their audience and the public at large.
Spoiler alert: It’s not.
I have heard so many times that “he doesn’t mean what he says” or “he won’t do those things” or “he’s just being hyperbolic” or even “Come on, he’s a good person.”
I wish I believed any of those excuses. I don’t.
