Merlin Mann, on this week’s “Reconcilable Differences”, said something that stuck with me:
When you (the voter) bought into this, you unintentionally told me a lot about the world you think you want.
That’s exactly how I feel. And something I’ve been struggling with in dealing with the people I know, am related to, and even work with.
Everyone wants me to be the bigger person. I should put the vitriol behind us and come together. I should find the commonalities and focus on those, and not focus on what divides us. Is it because their team won? Is that when the burden fell on me and my ilk?
And yet, is doing that really possible? They believe in such fundamental differences in how we treat other people. Other human beings. The hate, and pride that seems to spring from it, that comes from the side that they full-throatedly supported is just overwhelming.
I’m just having a really hard time with that right now.
