I wonder if any piece of legislation as “progressive” as the Clean Water Act (1972) would or could be passed in this day and age.

According to the U.S. Water Alliance:

1972 was an election year, and after a first term notable for its environmental policy achievements, then President Nixon vetoed the bill in an attempt to cast his fiscal conservatism against his already flagging opponent, George McGovern. Bipartisan majorities in both the House and Senate instead overrode President Nixon’s veto, and the bill became law on October 18, 1972.

Bipartisan…do we even know what that is anymore?
