In discussing 2015’s “The Martian” on the podcast The Rewatchables in October 2020, Sean Fennessey gives some thoughts that are still true today, if not more so than even 2020. He says:
This movie is an incredible relic of the Obama era in American history. I mean it just feels like a completely different time. It’s a movie that’s dedicated to faith in a government institution. It’s a movie that imagines a world in which the United States and China can collaborate to save something. It’s a movie that values science and intelligence over everything else. It valorizes the people who are the smartest people and it does not feel like we live in a world where that’s the case right now.
Imagine a world where intelligence and science were at the forefront of success in the United States of America. What a world, what a country, that would be. If only.
